Presidential Nominations for MMDCEs

In accordance with section 243 (1) of the 1992 constitution and section 20 (1) of the Local Government Act, 1993 of Act 462 – President John Dramani through the Local Government Ministry came up with another nominees for MMDEs on the 19^th June, 2013 and the list contains ten re-nominations with only two new appointments.

Hon. George Opare Addo for Akwepen North District, Hon. Joseph Tetteh Angmor for Upper Manya District, Hon. Emmanuel Odor Lartey for Dangbe West District with Hon. Andrews Sodah of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly are re-nominated awaiting  confirmation by their assembly members.

Among the list is Hon Alfred Vanderpuije of AMA whom people in Accra feels shouldn’t have been part of this team from President Mahama but the question is, on what grounds does the president re-nominate a person for the position of MMDCE?

Hon. Emmanuel Odor Lartey of Dangbe West is someone who is calm and hardly responds to the media but the last time when I check with my team of reporters, the people Dangbe are cool with him and that of work done in developing the community.

Hon Opare Addo stood for the MP ship of the Akwepen North Constituency during the just ended general elections on the ticket of the NDC but lost to the candidate of the NPP. He is media friendly and sure he is a party man, therefore, has the support of the party members in his constituency. Opare Addo may have some challenges with his assembly members over an agric contract he aided the assembly to award to Sidaco Company.

Hon. Tetteh Angmor of the Upper Manya had some hard time with his vetting and nominations because some youth felt he did very little to develop the community during his first four year.  Upper Manya is farming and fishing community with one of the oldest and biggest market  (Asesewa Market) in the Eastern Region but has bad road net work to the rural communities thereby making is difficult to bring farm produce to the market centre because of the bad road network. They also have very bad mobile service couple with other social amenities. Our checks indicate that, he has the support of most of the assembly members and that of the party members but not most NDC youth.

Hon Soda is likely to go through his confirmation by his assembly members and also have the support of the party members in his constituency but the community members think that, he has a lot to do to help develop the community. There is bad road net work, water from GWC does not flow regularly and the only traffic light in the municipality has not been working for the past four to five years. He has a mango farm he is managing with a private person for the municipality and the people will like to know how much the farm is adding to the IGF of the area. He is media friendly and may succeed if he tries to do the above for the people.

Will take time and tell you more about Lower Manya and some other district of interest in my next write up. I will also tell you more on what people think about these nominations and the re-nominations.

Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo

Hon. Andrews Soda is the Municipal Chief Executive of the Yilo Krobo Municipal area and has had the full term of office since nominated by the late Prof. Mills in 2008 and subsequent approval by the assembly. To me he is one of the noble politicians I have come across in terms of personality but I will not be the one to say if his personality translated in to development for the community.

During his time, we had one of the Farmers Day Celebration at Somanya and the occasion was used to construct some major roads and street lights in Somanya including the one leading to his residence. Some other important ones have been done but the people still call for more.

I won’t be able to mention all his achievement but I am sure he has been able to do some or most of the things his assembly set to do over the period with their common fun if not then I will be disappointed in the assemblymen of the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly for not bringing it to the attention of the community at less, through the media (Rite 90.1 Fm).

The only traffic light in the municipality he inherited is no more in use and cannot tell the future of that facility in his hands if he is kept as the MCE for Yilo in the current NDC administration.

He also inherited a mango plantation which he has given to a private person but difficult to tell if they are making profit out of that project to increase the IGF of Yilo.

Some people think he should be change because they still have developmental gabs and their major roads are not done but in all, Yilo is calmer than Lower and Upper Manya where people are demonstrating for change of their MDCEs.

For Hon. Soda, it will be a shock if he goes per what I hear and again, because of his engagement with the current MP, the PM and other key stakeholders in the community.

Nomination of New MMDCEs

There are questions on who becomes the next Metropolitan, Municipal or District Chief Executive of an area at every four years.
In some cases, the people in the area are interested in one person but the political party is also interested in another. There are times when the Member of Parliament (MP) is interested in one person and the party founder is in for another.
Do we then vote for these heads and representatives of central government  at the local level or the system should run the way it is now and should a qualify person loss the position because he/she is not in good terms with the MP of the area and of the same political party all in the name of the two will have to come together to bring developing?

In my next blog, I will tell you what is going on in the current nominations!!!!! Note that these leader are in charge of development in our communities.
